2015 Global Forum on Innovations in Agriculture
What value can be added to banana/plantain stem? How can we provide affordable sanitary pads to rural and marginalized girls in Nigeria so they can have more options for their future? This will be the focus of Lawrence’ presentation at the 2015 Global Forum on Innovations in Agriculture, Abu Dhabi (March 9-11). Springboard produces tones of banana and plantain stem from its farms annually. Over three million tonnes of these stems are produced annually in Nigeria, and then become agricultural waste. Springboard has found a way to add value to this waste by converting them into affordable sanitary pads for rural girls in Nigeria who cannot afford to buy the modern products. As a result, many of these girls miss out of classes every month during their menstrual cycle.
